Do you ever find yourself thinking, “I’m not good enough,” “I’m a fraud, and people will realize,” “I’m not as good as people think I am,” “I’ll never be as good as her,” or “Others are better than me”?
You aren’t alone. This persistent line of thinking is referred to as imposter syndrome. And I’m here to tell you that imposture syndrome doesn’t have to hold you back. This post was created to show you how to overcome imposter syndrome as a Christian.
3 Practical Steps to Overcome Imposter Syndrome as a Christian:
STEP 1: Recognize Imposter Syndrome for What It Is
Experiencing imposter syndrome means that you don’t internalize success. It means that you constantly feel inadequate and like you are not good enough, even though there is evidence that proves otherwise.
Recognize that this is an obstacle preventing you from stepping into God's purpose and calling for your life and from walking in your God-given identity.
ACTION: Journal about the times when you felt inadequate, unworthy, and like an imposter. Write down the specific thoughts that come up and ask yourself, “Is this what God says concerning me?” Recognize these thoughts and doubts for what they are - lies and obstacles, not the truth.
STEP 2: Challenge the Lies with God’s Truth
Imposter syndrome often stems from lies that you believe about yourself, that you’re not “enough,” or that you’ll never measure up. You must combat these lies by confronting and replacing them with Biblical truths.
Romans 12:2 - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Transformation begins when you align your thoughts with God’s truth about who you are.
How do you become transformed? By renewing your mind.
How do you renew your mind? By regularly taking in “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Deut 8:3; Matt 4:4) and memorizing the Word of God. When you start saturating your mind with the living and active Word of God (Heb 4:12), the Holy Spirit will begin to renovate your mind to align with the mind of Christ.
ACTION: For every self-doubt and lie you identify, find a Bible verse that speaks to the opposite, that speaks the truth. For example, if you think, “I’m not qualified,” remember this verse:
Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
You can also remember what God spoke to Moses when he didn’t feel qualified to lead the Israelites out of Egypt:
Exodus 4:10-12 - Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”
Remind yourself of what God says about you and reject the lies.
STEP 3: Embrace Your God-Given Identity
Imposter syndrome can make you feel unworthy of the calling God has placed on your life. Embrace the truth about who you are in Christ.
Ephesians 2:10 - For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
You are His workmanship. You belong to God. When you read the story of creation in Genesis 1, you will see that after everything God created, He said that it was good. You were created by God. You are His masterpiece.
“The enemy attacks your identity so that if you don’t see yourself as the person God designed you to be, you can’t fulfill your destiny.” - Dan Mohler.
Imposter syndrome is a targeted attack of the enemy against your identity. So, solidify your identity in Christ in your mind so that you are equipped to win over the enemy’s attacks.
Action: Write down what God says concerning you. You can start by reading Ephesians 1 and writing what God’s Word says concerning you in that chapter. Keep this as an open list so that as you continue reading the Word, you can keep adding to it. This list will remind you of your identity in Christ whenever self-doubt creeps in.
Breaking free from imposter syndrome doesn’t happen overnight. It requires taking small, intentional steps. But know that every step forward helps build up your confidence in your identity in Christ.
